PhysicsCentral Will be Marching for Science…Will You?

Recently, PhysicsCentral’s parent organization endorsed the upcoming global March for Science—which means that we can now officially say the same! The American Physical Society is an official partner of the march, so you’ll be able to join a coalition of physicists and physics fans alike gathered on the national mall in Washington, D.C. this April 22nd! If you’re not in the DC area, you can likely find a satellite march happening in your city, or create your own through the same page!

Per the official March for Science site, “the rally will be a call for politicians to implement science based policies, as well as a public celebration of science and the enormous public service it provides in our democracy, our economy, and our daily lives.” It is a political event, a call to incorporate science into public policy and fund basic research, but it’s a non-partisan event as well. No matter what your political affiliation is, government policies grounded in fact should be something we can all agree on.

There’s more to the event than just chants, signs, and speakers, though—various “teach-in” tents will be set up around the national mall between 9:00 and 2:00, where scientists from a multitude of fields will share their passion and knowledge with the crowd.

APS Physics is partnering with OSA to sponsor a teach-in by author and educator James Kakalios, the brilliant mind behind The Physics of Superheroes, which will happen later in the day. Details are still being worked out, but to find the location and time of Kakalios’ speech, keep an eye on the March for Science’s official page.

We’ll be posting more on this next week, including ideas for fun signs to bring with you—look out for the next installment!
